The Batak people live in the north of Sumatra, in the hilly region of lake Toba. At the beginning of this century the last Batak were placed under the authority of the Netherlands. Most of them were christianized. The Batak form the largest protestant community of Asia. Nevertheless a lot of old traditions were preserved. More than 4 million people are Batak; it is one of Indonesia's largest population groups

Kebanyakan orang Batak adalah beragama kristian.Mereka mengamalkan tradisi lama orang dahulu.Di Indonesia ia adalah puak yang paling ramai sekali.Sebenarnya Batak adalah nama biasa bagi 6 kumpulan yang berbeza bahasa,budaya dan perwatakan.Rumah orang Batak yanh di dalam gambar di atas itu adalah rumah Batak yang typical,tetapi mempunyai siatem yang sam untuk majlis perkahwinan.Mereka boleh berkahwin dalam keturunan Batak sahaja walaupun berlainan suku dan selepas berkahwin si isteri akan menjadi suku kaum si suami secara automatik.Batak Toba dan Batak Simalungun tinggal di sekitar Parapat.Orang Batak Toba,Simulungun,Pak-Pak dan Karo menyampaikan hasrat apa pun melalui lagu sentimentel berunsurkan cinta.Jika orang di Bali boleh membuat ukiran,orang Batak menyanyi dan bermain gitar.
